Bear Lake is a fun popular destination for backpackers and day hikers, hosting warm water and great views all summer. Just walking a few miles can make you feel as if you've left the wilderness behind for another one. This is actually one of the worst sites I’ve had up here (relatively speaking of course) as it was more than a bit exposed. Led by a lovely friendly man, a train of four llamas rounded the corner, bells jingling, followed by a beautiful medium sized dog. Views are so much more expansive than I would have expected! I was a bit confused as we were not in grizzly bear territory so bells on hikers would be quite out of place. - easiest leg, mostly shade Alright so lets talk about what we wanted to get done. We were up and moving by 7 am the next morning. Water was filtered, dinner was cooked, and thankfully we were in the tent before the mosquitos came out in full force. Bugs weren’t terrible but the crowds were a little tricky. There were several trees fallen over the trail that we had to go over, under, or around, but it was no problem getting through. Bear Lake is pretty buggy and very packed right now. There's a little bit of a climb that's in the sun, but most of the trail is level with small hills. This appears to be a fairly popular trailhead with quite a few cars there mid week in July. It's easy to get lost, but a GPS can keep you on the right track. Overview This is a moderate out and back trail in Emigrant Wilderness. She stated it was a very spiritual and one amazing adventure. The days were perfect hiking weather in the 70s-80s. From there we made it to a little lake where we had lunch and then down into the valley to cross Lilly Creek. It is 13 difficult miles from Crabtree campground, a large part of it uphill. At Grouse Lake we found a spacious camp site with a large stone fire ring on the North of the Lake and trail. As usual with my trips, the goals differed from what was actually accomplished. As long as you can hear the Piute Creek to your left you will pick up the trial at Piute Meadows. Things to note: Right at the end of the trail we ran into a single pair of backpackers who were prepping to go fish. Rather than try and camp somewhere we had already been, we began heading towards Piute Meadow, descending 150 feet vertically towards Lily Creek. June through October are the best times weather-wise to visit Emigrant Wilderness; however, the trail does tend to open in May when the snow has cleared the roads. This trail has it all. Bear cans are not required. We put our packs back on and started on our way back towards Camp Lake with thunder rolling behind us. The Emigrant Wilderness is over 100,000 acres with over 80 lakes within a granite basin filled with granitic domes, ridges, and small hills. Between Lunch Meadow and Emigrant Lake. On its own that would have sounded like such a cool experience too but we had just seen four llamas so we were not as impressed. Eventually we reached the trailhead where we took a quick break by dipping our feet in the nearby stream. As a whole the trail was very well maintained, perfect for a first timer. The water was quite warm and clear but the mushy bottom of the lake made walking around a bit uncomfortable. Long Way to Long Lake – Emigrant Wilderness: Stanislaus National Forest. The climb and elevation can get to you however once at the top the views are amazing 180 degrees of views. Road is completely clear of snow all the way to the trailhead, and high majority of the trail. This was the shortest day, but the incline in elevation was intense for a little while. After the long northern no name lake, larger patches of snow exist, but trail is easy to refind. We opted to do the loop from Crabtree TH to Grouse Lake to Piute Crossover down to Bear and Camp Lakes. Eventually we parted ways, the llamas toward Bear Lake and us towards Crabtree Trailhead.
